Today I decided to revisit an old painting that I painted about a year ago. Someone commissioned a painting and all they wanted was a single tree in a landscape. It was a really big painting (24″×36″-the biggest I’ve done) and I had a couple of problems.
My first problem was that I didn’t know what I was doing. I had no idea how to fill a canvas that was so big.
My second problem was that my mom passed away shortly after I started the painting and I went through a pretty dark time, so the painting ended up a lot darker and lonely feeling than it was meant to be.
I ultimately refunded the person who commissioned it because she said it wasn’t what she wanted. I don’t blame her; I wouldn’t have wanted it either. This experience is why I don’t do commissions.
I was organizing my painting area earlier and stumbled across it. I fully intended to start a new painting today but I guess I’ll do that tomorrow. It seemed to want to come back to life, so I pulled it out and started adding some brighter colors. I really want to brighten the sky behind the tree, but I would have to paint over the branches and then try to make the branches look good again and I’m not sure I want to do that.
Anyway, here’s how it looks so far.
Thanks for stopping by!
